So, fall begins. We have somewhat cooler temperatures and our bird research tells us that migration has begun. In the immediate vicinity, I notice we already have a slight change in the regular crew that comes daily to our feeder. Our current daily visitors are the: Blue Jays, Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, Titmice, Mockingbirds, Brown Thrashers, Mourning Doves, Red-Bellied Woodpeckers (both parents, one juvenile and one fledgling still here), and House Finches. The most puzzling daily absence to me is our Cardinals. I see them occasionally; either in the distance, or sporadically at the feeder. I suspect that because the bigger birds are still coming so regularly this year it has merely discouraged them from returning every day. Sadly, we haven't seen the Downy Woodpeckers in awhile at all though they never did come daily. I hope that perhaps they have another fledge and will visit again soon. Our sweet tempered American Robin visits the tree nearby periodically as does a couple of Starlings, but they haven’t come close for a while. As last year, the House Sparrows have left. I look forward to seeing whether the Chipping Sparrows will move in to their former abode soon. The Ospreys fly over daily and both the Red-Tailed Hawks and Coopers Hawk can be seen nearby about once a week (though the RT Hawk rarely returns to the tree he visited last year so often). Isn’t it interesting that birds always “do …what they do.” The birds nest, fly, eat, (scatter seeds), sing, reproduce etc. without deviation. They just do what they were created to do. They do what they were created to do, despite the circumstances. The birds don’t seem to be bothered by sun, rain, wind, clouds etc. They just do what they were created to do. In one sense I am glad we are different. I am glad we have free will and are not relegated to a cycle of the same actions. In another sense, I envy the birds… I have never ever seen a bird pacing back and forth on a branch seemingly worrying. They don’t peck on my sliding door and ask me if I am certain there will be seed here tomorrow so they can plan their day accordingly; nor do they seem to screech and moan when a gigantic breeze blows, they just keep flying. When a hard rain comes, they sit and weather it. They just do what they were created to do; regardless, of the circumstances! Do we? I know as much as I try, I don’t always. How many times did God put in the Bible to trust Him for the future, trust Him for our daily needs, not to worry, give Him our cares and so on. Recently, I was praying for what I consider a “big” resolution to an issue. After some research into my circumstances, I realized God had in a way answered me months ago. Here I was pacing back and forth “on my branch,” praying in earnest for resolution to an issue, pleading with him to intervene, He already had; albeit, differently than I expected. He had slowly and surely been working and interceding etc. without my immediate knowledge. You see, I was looking for the booming authoritative command, “Peace be Still.” I expected the grand gesture. The kaboom. I was not looking for the daily little whisper of love, support, supply, and comfort from my Lord. Maybe this is because I truly didn’t give it to Him in the first place. If I had truly trusted, laid it at his feet, and just continued to do what I was made to do, would God have answered any differently? Probably not, but most assuredly I could have saved myself angst in the time being. So, another Bible lesson reinforced by the birds…Trust God for now and tomorrow; and, just do what you were made to do! |
