MOURNING DOVE
Zenaida macroura
In late June 2018 we saw our first pair of doves. Not knowing much about Doves, we were pleased. As of February 2019 we now have about six doves that come just about every day. In October, they broke the first clear bird feeder because they all tried to sit on it at once. Since then, after I had a "talk" with them, I'd like to think we have an understanding.

This understanding, only two can come at one time. If only two come, I leave them alone. If more than two come then whomever is near by will wave their arms etc. and scare the doves away. As I write this, there are two doves on the feeder, two waiting on the railing, a cardinal, a chickadee on the porch floor and a titmouse that keeps sneaking in to take seed around the doves. So, it works....sometimes.

The doves do seem to get along with every other bird. except maybe the Jays. When the Blue Jays come, most of the other birds move and let them eat first (peaking order I guess). Not the Doves. I once watched one of the Jays land and squawk (like he does) and everyone else scattered but the Doves. The Jay ended up taking off into the air and coming back around, swooping down at them. They then reluctantly scattered. Abby feels badly we don't have more pictures of the doves, so expect more soon. I feel badly at times because I think to the Lord of Hosts we seem very much like the Doves.

Through winter 2019 and spring 2020 we have nine Doves (the orginals plus the fledges grown up. We think that we might already have two more fledges from 2020 but we have not confirmed yet.
