MALE RED-BELLIED WP WITH FLEDGE
Summer of 2018 we were introduced to our Red-Bellied Woodpeckers.  We believed then that we had a juvenile along with one male and female that year.   By early 2019, we know for certain that we have the pair .  We had two fledges summer 2019 and as of late spring 2020 the pair is still with us.  We hope to see another fledge this year.   The name Red-Bellied Woodpecker may seem strange but there are red patches on the belly. You can catch a glimspe of them in the picture up and below in the gallery pictures.

MALE RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER
This is a male Red-Bellied Woodpecker.  We know this by the head which is a red "cap."  The female has red but there is a difference.   You can see it  on the close up below.  Our two RBWP also have different personalities.  After watching them for awhile we have determined the male is more skittish and timid.  He will tangle with the other birds but its not his go-to behavior.    The female is more aggressive and will stand her ground against several of the  Jays at once or even chase off other Woodpeckers.

FEMALE RED-BELLIED WP
This is the female Red Bellied Woodpecker. She has red on the back of her had but also what looks like  a bald-spot.   As you can see it is not a bald spot but some  grey feathers. She comes much more infrequently to both the seed feeder and the meal-worm dish.  Additionally, she usually gets into the meal-worm dish  when she eats.

2ND FLEDGE 2019
Spring/Summer 2019 we  had two Fledglings!  The first fledgling, along with the Grackle seemed to be the most clumsy (see the picture below)  His inital foray to the feeder included a tap on the window and uncerionious slide down the door.  He then sat on the balcony for awhile.  Next he attempted to fly off but ran into the railing.  I know, I was very worried the first few days but after a few weeks he was swooping and gliding like a pro.  As of mid-June, he was coming by himself but at least one of the parents is nearby.  July of 2019 the second fledgling  appeared (see this picture).  Spring 2020 we have not seen any fledges yet but are looking intently.

FIRST FLEDGE 2019
Both fledges in the summer of 2019 turned out to be males.    As of November 2019 the couple was still here daily and every once in-awhile one of the male fledglings.  Before the second male fledged we felt badly for the first fledge after we found a particularly interesting interaction.  The the second fledge was on the tree and a parent at the feeder.  The second fledge was making noises and at the same time the parent flew to the branch to feed the second fledge the first fledge also came and wanted to be fed.  The parent turned its back and hopped to the second fledge.  It was a little sad as the first fledge kind of sat there looking longingly at the food.  Never fear though the first fledge then flew to feeder and got his own food.  Talk about tough love parenting!

Since the RBWP come every day, we have 100s of pictures.  These are some of our favorites.
"Our," male and female together.  They rarely come at the same time but on one of those rare occasions we obtained this pic.

ALL PICTURES ON THIS SITE WERE TAKEN ONLY BY ABBY, CJ OR ME.  WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE PHOTOS ON THE BIRDING FIELD TRIP PAGE, ALL PICTURES HAVE ALL BEEN TAKEN IN OUR URBAN BACKYARD/TREES, OR IN THE SKY AND TREES ABOVE OUR HOUSE/NEIGHBORHOOD FROM 2018 TO THE PRESENT.  WE ARE USUALLY BIRDING EVERYDAY BUT ARE ALSO USUALLY BEHIND UPLOADING PICTURES.
