JUNE 16, 2020, is the first time seeing this incredible bird at our "Nest." We have gone on several treks through the woods with the purpose of looking to see one, being teased constantly by their hammering noise and song, only to end up catching just a fleeting glimpse. Abby saw one once on the one bird sit she did near Brookgreen gardens. This female, Pileated Woodpecker, dropped in our tree around noon on the 16th of June. I was working on the computer and happened to glance up, squeal, and fumble for my camera (usually by my side). Abby mistook my squeal for an alarm utterance, and thinking it was another hawk in our, "Bird Tree," she ran across the house to come see (with CJ in tow). Thankfully, 😅Abby quickly spotted the woodpecker and held out her hand for the camera. She, the woodpecker, stayed just long enough for Abby to contort herself quickly into several positions where she could get some shots. This was not easy as the Woodpecker was very quick, travelling up one tree then over and up another. Of course, both of our Red-bellied WPs, (male and female) came immediately and looked none to happy to see her. Additionally, a Grackle pod was in the second tree she flew towards and also didn't appear pleased to see her. Nonetheless, WE were pleased. While I hope to see her again, I really do not want her to come back unless she brings a mate. My understanding is that single Pileated WP do not do well against predators. These birds are already deemed uncommon and since we have plethora of hawks in addition to other critters, it would be better if she settled nearby only with a mate. |

Except for the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker (possibly extinct), the uncommon Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers in North America, ranging from 15+ to 19+ inches tall. These woodpeckers were the model for the cartoon Woody Woodpecker. This is a female because she lacks the red stripe on the check and has a gray-brown "forehead." Both males and females have a striking, regal red crest.
