We have a few Common Grackles and Boat -Tailed Grackles. I won't split out the two here but visually you can tell the difference by their sizes mainly. Aside for the length and splay of the tail of the Boat-Tailed Grackle which the Common Grackle lacks, the Common Grackle is smaller in length. The Common Grackle is supposed to have a more definite line of demarcation between the color on the head and the rest of the body, but I have trouble with aspect depending on the light that particular day. I believe they live a block away by the water. When I walk at night they are usually sitting around the bottom branches over the water. These birds I think get branded unfairly as unlucky and a nuisance. I first warmed to them slightly when they would get th e slugs out of my garden. Later that year, when we met "Grackley," (see below) one of the fledges that year, he amused by his clumsiness and vocalizations we couldn't help but learn to like. This year we met Hippity-Hop and enjoyed her visits and persistence in the face of trouble. We also love the beautiful iridescent quality of their feathers . The pictures don't do it justice. as the colors can range from shades of purples and blues. Additionally, given the prolific progenation of the Starlings this year the Grackles are not our most numerous or most voracious eaters at the feeders. |

One fledgling from summer 2019, we call Grackley. Very vocal Grackle even when he was feeding himself later.

Spring and summer 2019 we have two Grackles born. The look on this adult's face I think has been replicated by human parents many time. As of 2020 they are back daily and so far three fledges.

I think in the pictures it is easy to see why their bad reputation is reinforced; though, at times their expressions are comical rather than mean. Grackles are of course not crows, though.
