RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD

Archilochus colubris

AMOS 4:13, FOR, LO HE THAT FORMETH THE MOUNTAINS, AND CREATETH THE WIND, AND DECLARETH UNTO MAN WHAT IS HIS THOUGHT, THAT MAKETH THE MORNING DARKNESS, AND TREADETH UPON THE HIGH PLACES OF THE EARTH, THE LORD THE GOD OF HOSTS, IS HIS NAME.

We have had a hummingbird feeder up on a side window since 2018, as I saw one hummingbird fly by when I was in my office.  The bird did not return; so, we moved the feeder near to the other feeders.  Other then the Mockingbird and Thrasher who liked to perch upon it, we saw no other birds approach.

Before I left late July I saw one more time a hummingbird approach and quickly put store bought nectar to fill it up.  No birds returned.  At around the second week of August Abby and CJ saw a hummingbird appear and decided to mix their own sugar water.  They did and the hummingbirds began to come daily!

We believe that we had two different kinds but mostly the native ruby -throated.  When they were here they came every day.  We have not seen them yet in  2020 at our feeder.  I understand that others in the county have already had visits.  Sometimes, I think that the high traffic of the  other birds keeps them away.  Hopefully, once my railing boxes bloom they will  be attracted by the flowers to come back and pay us a visit.
