We have one male and one female Downy Woodpecker but very rarely see the female. The female lacks the red on her head. Up until spring 2020 they were only here periodically. Once we offered suet cakes from a deck pole (see our favorite things) , they began coming every day at least once a day. As of late summer 2020, this everyday behavior has continued.

The Downys were absent for about a month and as of November 2019 returned to us every few days. Late summer 2020 they are here everyday.

Spring 2019. They come very infrequently now but we do catch a glimpse occasionally. Of course, with leaves on the tree and their speed they are sometimes very hard to see.

In 2019 we had two fledges from asychronous broods.

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 24, 2019. We have a fledge. Pictures to follow. We measured the leaves. We doubled checked with an APP that Abby has on her phone. An adult male will grow to be about 6 inches tall. One parent comes with him when he comes to the tree in front of the feeder. They stay nearby. We have seen the female more often now.
