Osprey

Pandion haliaetus

PSALM 33:6-9, BY THE WORD OF THE LORD WERE THE HEAVENS MADE; AND ALL THE HOST OF THEM BY THE BREATH OF HIS MOUTH.  HE GATHERETH THE WATERS OF THE SEA TOGETHER AS AN HEAP: HE LAYETH UP THE DEPTH IN STOREHOUSES. LET ALL THE EARTH FEAR THE LORD: LET ALL THE INHABITANTS OF THE WORLD STAND IN AWE OF HIM. FOR HE SPAKE, AND IT WAS DONE; HE COMMANDED, AND IT STOOD FAST.

In 2019,  For several weeks we saw a dark figure fly directly  over the house low and fast.   By the time I would see it and run for the camera it was gone!  Thankfully, Abby (in between college classes) has been able to captures the first photos.     Since then, both CJ and I have gotten better  (or quicker) at taking pictures in  general.    As of 2020 we still see them.  See below.

This picture and the header picture on this page of the Osprey with the fish was taken July 13, 2020 at  around 12:30 PM.    In this case the Osprey flew right over the house a couple of times (he was spooked and flew a couple of circles).  As it happened it was the first day we saw the Swallow-Tail Kites.  We think that  he saw the Kites and  he was "afraid," he'd lose his catch.  All three of us were in the right place at the right time but Abby and CJ ran outside and I stayed inside.  Because it was so hot that day, their lenses fogged up and it took them an extra beat to get the pics.   I just kept snapping but my range of motion was inhibited by the house.   Anyway, we were just happy to see him and his proud catch.
As of 2020 we still see the Osprey flying over; he is especially active in the evenings during the summer months though appears to have a flight  path slightly more north during these months.  During these months,I see him more often while I am walking  in the evenings though still occasionally during the day.

ALL PICTURES ON THIS SITE WERE TAKEN ONLY BY ABBY, CJ OR ME.  WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE PHOTOS ON THE BIRDING FIELD TRIP PAGE, ALL PICTURES HAVE ALL BEEN TAKEN IN OUR URBAN BACKYARD/TREES, OR IN THE SKY AND TREES ABOVE OUR HOUSE/NEIGHBORHOOD FROM 2018 TO THE PRESENT.  WE ARE USUALLY BIRDING EVERYDAY BUT ARE ALSO USUALLY BEHIND UPLOADING PICTURES.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE INFORMATION ABOUT A SPECIFIC PICTURE PLEASE EMAIL US.   COGENTLY, IF WE HAVE ERRONEOUSLY MISLABELED A PICTURE PLEASE BRING IT TO OUR ATTENTION.
